Substance Abuse & Addiction: Facts & Recovery

Since America is the world’s largest consumer of illicit drugs, substance abuse and addiction is a huge issue in this country*. One misconception that most people have is that they feel addicts need to exert more will power in order to stop using. Unfortunately, addiction is an extremely complex disease and a person’s brain becomes seriously altered when addicted to drugs and/or alcohol.

Family disintegration, loss of employment, education failure, domestic violence and child neglect are all underlying issues directly connected to substance abuse. Addicts and alcoholics have one mission in life, and that is to achieve their next high. The medical repercussions of substance abuse and addiction are extensive and can include severe mental and psychological disorders, viruses, insomnia, extreme paranoia and hallucinations, overdose and death. Substance abuse and addiction can also more than likely end in homelessness, financial bankruptcy and cause one’s family to disown of them. Although harsh, these extreme cases will bring a victim to the point where they are willing to seek help.

All staff members at The Owl’s Nest are recovered addicts.
