It was projected in 2013 that nearly 9.5 percent of the nation’s population had used illicit drugs during the month that this information was gathered. That is nearly 33 million people. This means that mostly everyone is either directly affected or knows someone who was directly affected by drug use, abuse or addiction. In recent years, the most popular drugs in this country have been Marijuana and prescription drugs. Heroin has also made a huge comeback and the number of related deaths has nearly doubled since 1999.
In 2013, nearly 22.7 million Americans were in need of substance abuse treatment but only 2.5 million of them received it. With a drastic change in our culture, drugs have become more accepted and less feared by teens and young adults. The usage of illicit drugs by people in their late teens has nearly doubled and can be related to an increase in the diagnosis of psychological disorders in the past three years.
